About the Role – Senior Safety Engineer
SPIE Services Nigeria Limited is currently seeking a highly experienced Senior Safety Engineer to join its workforce in Lagos, Nigeria. This is a contract, full-time position that plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and integrity of oil and gas facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing expert safety engineering support across all phases of facility design, operation, and abandonment, while ensuring compliance with local and international regulations and company standards.

Key Responsibilities
The Senior Safety Engineer will be required to perform the following duties:
Compliance and Standards
- Ensure compliance with applicable local and international regulations and company referential.
- Provide input on safety engineering documents for facilities design, operation, and abandonment in conformity with company, industry, and statutory requirements.
- Provide safety engineering support on studies conducted internally and follow up on safety engineering studies undertaken by contractors during basic and detailed engineering phases.
Operational Support
- Undertake periodic updates of facility safety concepts.
- Review and make necessary inputs to all safety-related modifications and corresponding engineering documents for existing facilities, including P&IDs, ESD logic, fire and gas cause and effects matrices, active and passive fire protection, fire and gas detection systems, escape and evacuation routes, hazardous area classification, safety layouts, and flare radiation studies.
- Undertake the development, review, and update of operational safety cases in line with regulatory (NUPRC) requirements for operated sites in Nigeria.
Risk Assessment
- Lead specific safety engineering studies and reviews in support of the Request for Modification (RFM) process and Downgraded Situations (DGS), including HAZOP, HAZID, and BowTie assessments.
- Support operational entities in derogation preparation.
- Undertake flammable and toxic gas dispersion, fire, and explosion consequence modelling using PHAST software, and interpret results for the safe operation of oil and gas facilities.
- Undertake Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) assessment processes and SIL assignment for safety instrumented systems within oil and gas facilities.
Major Risk Management
- Facilitate Safety and Environmental Critical Element (SECE) identification workshops and follow up on safety engineering responsibilities as specified in company guidelines.
- Lead in major risk identification, develop risk reduction measures for managing technological risks, and monitor implementation in compliance with group benchmarks for technological risk assessment.
- Lead major risk awareness training and barrier verification exercises.
- Promote major risk awareness within the company via development of Process Safety Event articles for dissemination to operated assets.
- Support major risk management implementation through the development of dashboards for monitoring barrier status.
- Provide process safety support to Engineering Construction & Projects (ECP), Operational/Asset Operated by Others (AOBO) entities, and partners on risk management issues.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemical, Petroleum, or a related engineering discipline. A Master’s degree in Safety Engineering or a similar field is an added advantage.
- A minimum of 12 years of professional experience in the oil and gas industry, with at least 7 years in an equivalent position as a Process Safety Engineer, Technical Safety Engineer, or Loss Prevention Engineer.
- Sound knowledge of loss prevention standards, procedures, and major hazard legislation.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment techniques and management, including Hazard Identification (HAZID), Hazard and Operability Review (HAZOP), Hazard Analysis (HAZAN), Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), and other related reviews.
- Proficiency in consequence modelling software such as PHAST, firewater hydraulic network analysis (PIPENET), and fire and gas detection mapping (DETECT-3D).
- Possession of TUV Functional Safety Engineer certification is an added advantage.
- Self-motivated with strong investigation, observation, communication, and organisational skills.
